"I made you preserved egg and lean meat porridge - you seemed to enjoy it a lot in the past, I don’t know if you still like the taste."
As she came over to take off Flossie Wright’s hat and scarf, Mrs. Wright explained gently, but her countenance always carried a hint of worry, afraid that Flossie might not approve of the unnecessary ingredients she added into the porridge.
Flossie, having been spoiled growing up, definitely had a habit of being picky with her food. She often caused a ruckus because the meals served on the dining table weren’t to her taste. When in a better mood, she would simply refuse to eat and retreat to her room; when in a bad mood, she would practically overturn the entire table, leading Mr. Wright to scold Mrs. Wright for spoiling her from an early age. Whenever this happened, Mr. and Mrs. Wright would end up in a heated argument, sometimes even escalating to blows.
Of course, after each argument between Mr. and Mrs. Wright, Flossie could not avoid taking a scolding either.
After Flossie left the Wright Family, Mrs. Wright could hardly maintain control over Flossie’s food preferences, as there were very few opportunities for her to cook for Flossie. She agonized over yesterday’s menu for the better part of the afternoon. Seeing Flossie give a nod of approval, she was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.
Looking closely at Mrs. Wright and taking in her worried expression, Flossie hesitated for a moment before shaking her head, "No."
She had never been picky with food. She had simply asked Mrs. Wright to make some porridge last night because she believed it to be simple enough. However, she hadn’t expected that no matter what she asked Mrs. Wright to prepare, it would always worry her.
Flossie could not understand how a mother would feel when confronted with a long-lost daughter, nor could she comprehend her desire to satisfy her in all respects. However, any normal person facing such care should not harden their heart in return. All she could do was reassure her when she was worried.
As soon as they reached the living room, Mrs. Wright brought over the steaming bowl of preserved egg and lean meat porridge. She eagerly anticipated Flossie’s evaluation. Only after Flossie took a bite and said, "It tastes good," did Mrs. Wright break out in a smile which was more joyful than welcoming in the new year.
"Flossie," gazing at Flossie eating the porridge she had lovingly prepared, Mrs. Wright felt a mix of emotions. She shuffled closer to Flossie, full of hesitation, "We might not be able to go out with you tomorrow."
"Hmm?" She responded reflexively, but immediately turned her head to ask with a hint of confusion, "What’s wrong?"
"Well," Mrs. Wright slowly spoke. There was still tenderness in her eyes, but her voice carried a touch of sorrow, "Your father just called and wants you to return tomorrow. He probably has something to discuss with you."
The movement of her holding the bowl paused slightly. Flossie’s gaze swept over Mrs. Wright’s rather distressed face. Her slender eyes narrowed for a moment, but the word she uttered was casual, "Oh."
Following traditional practice, if the Wright Family wanted Flossie to return, they would definitely initiate contact with her directly. Even if they met with rejection, they would likely resort to force to bring her back. Now, with Mr. Wright at the helm of the family, his arrogance was getting out of hand. Anything that didn’t conform to his wishes was likely to be confronted with all manners of retaliations.
Since they are opting for a roundabout strategy now, it signifies that he doesn’t want to force matters with her. However, to persuade Mrs. Wright to urge her to come back, he must have used some tactics, with applying pressure being the easiest.
One ordinary family against an influential clan... it’s like an egg striking a rock, isn’t it?
