Having seen true danger, Flossie Wright knew the risks. It was clear that those with any sense should steer clear of it.
However, what Glenn Hutchinson and his companions were facing was likely to be much more complex.
The soldiers, sacrificing their lives for their country, earn nothing more than recognition. Given their status, all information is classified, even their well-deserved honors might be stripped away.
For a country, anyone can step up as long as they have the capability. But for a family, losing a member might mean their utter devastation.
As if sensing Flossie’s gaze, Glenn Hutchinson glanced at her. His eyes were void of heaviness or the signs of pondering, as if this was a matter with no room for consideration.
He diverted his gaze and casually said, "There are many single children here."
The phone line fell silent for a moment. Clearly, the person on the other end was at loss for words.
Hutchinson’s grandfather, unable to argue further, whined like a child, "No more excuses! You must return at the beginning of the year. I have selected some suitable girls for you. You must not leave until you are married!"
Glenn Hutchinson responded decisively and directly, as if he did not a moment’s thought.
However, the sincerity was lacking.
Flossie rolled her eyes, it was apparent he was just humoring his grandfather. Considering the way Hutchinson’s grandfather was meddling, it was doubtful Hutchinson would return for the holidays.
Hutchinson’s grandfather, too trusting of his grandson, actually believed him and began to detail the qualities of the "suitable girls". He knew every minute detail about them, even more enthusiastic than a traditional matchmaker.
By the time Flossie, who had been eavesdropping so openly, thought about leaving, a cold object suddenly wrapped around her hand.
A sudden pain hit her, making Flossie gasp instinctively. Looking down, she found a large snake biting her hand, its long body suspended in the air like a dancing rope. It was a stomach-churning sight.
In mid-air, the pull caused the snake to release its grip on Flossie’s hand and promptly fell to the ground.
Being bitten, Flossie naturally didn’t have the time to worry about the snake. But just as it was about to hit the ground, a hand flashed by and accurately grabbed the snake at its soft underbelly. The snake had no chance it could break free from Glenn Hutchinson’s grip.
In a matter of seconds, the snake with its distinct mix of white and yellow hue met its end. Glenn Hutchinson threw it meters away, then seized Flossie’s bitten hand into his own.
"Corn snake, non-venomous."
The cold hand was suddenly gripped by a warm one. Flossie’s eyes flickered, she tried to pull away but her hand was held tight, leaving her with no opportunity to resist.
There were two puncture wounds on the back of her hand, although they weren’t deep due to her quick reaction, blood was still oozing out, making for an unpleasant sight.
The phone call was ended by Glenn Hutchinson. Due to the nature of their training, injuries were common. Out of habit, Glenn always carried emergency bandages and medication with him.
