Caught off guard, the grip was very tight, Codie Coleman desperately tried to break free, but that only brought a greater force in response.
Binding her tightly, the pain in her wrist was intense.
Yet, it was nothing compared to the pain in her heart.
Looking up and recognizing Flossie Wright’s face, Codie stood up sharply and raised her other hand to strike at Flossie, "What do you think you’re doing—"
Her other hand was caught in midair.
Flossie’s expression was cold as she gazed down at Codie, who was half a head shorter than her.
"She’s dead. You can guard her for a day, a month, a year, if you like, but all you’ll see is her turning into a skeleton," she said firmly, word by word.
Her tone was somber, word by word carrying weight.
The expressionless face and the cold words Flossie spoke startled everyone around them.
They didn’t know where she had come from, but her words, so cruelly exposing someone’s wounds, even made them feel a chill.
Codie stared at her, her expression numb.
She’s dead...
Those few words, like a curse, echoed in her mind, and with a blink, tears abruptly slid down from the corners of her eyes.
Her gaze dimmed, Flossie looked at her with a slightly softer tone, "If you are truly her mother, then let her rest in peace."
The firm sound of her voice peeled back the pain at the bottom of Codie’s heart.
So blunt, so heartless.
Yet, so very real.
Tears streamed down, blurring her vision, and the person in front of her became hazy, the unclear silhouette vaguely familiar.
Codie collapsed onto Flossie, unable to hold back her sobs.
Grief, desolation, loneliness.
Having lost her only support, from now on, her life was again solitary.
The entire area was suddenly filled with only her cries.
Meanwhile—
Two military personnel holding a body bag, upon catching Flossie’s glance, immediately went to encase the little girl’s body.
They handled it with extreme care, as if afraid to disturb the soul of the departed.
The onlookers watched in silence.

The woman who appeared from nowhere haughtily stopped a crazed mother with just a few pointed words, compelling her to face reality.
The mother held her, while Flossie stood straight-backed, her expression indifferent, her furrowed brows adding a touch of sorrow that was inscrutable.
Ann Cavanaugh stood at the edge of the crowd.
From a distance, she watched Flossie, initially feeling some discontent, but that discontent gradually dissipated, leaving a sense of helplessness in its wake.
Truthfully, Ann didn’t agree with Flossie’s approach.
There should have been a better way to handle this, like consolation or comfort; they could have helped the mother to calm down in a gentler way, allowing her to feel the care and warmth of others before letting her daughter go with a willing heart.
Not the way Flossie did it.
To expose someone’s sore spot and forcibly drag them back to reality was cruel in its vivid sorrow.
This method was too brutal; not everyone was strong enough to bravely face the immense pain of outliving their own child.
Ann realized she had no right to comment.
So, her fleeting discontent vanished, leaving her impression of Flossie only deepened.
After crying and yelling, Codie finally came to accept the reality.
Her voice hoarse from crying, she managed a strained thank you to Flossie before accompanying her daughter’s remains as she left.
After waking up, Flossie hadn’t eaten or drunk anything until Codie had departed; only then did she find some food in the tent, just enough to solve the problem of hunger.
