The cold wind blew harshly, the silver moonlight spread across the mountain tops, accentuating the growing chill of the night.

Clara Birch and Agnes Parker silently tied two ropes before cautiously climbing down the hillside under the watchful gaze of Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes.
If it were simply rock climbing, this would be an effortless task for them, considering their intensive training over the past month. However, Flossie’s words "We can fight" ignited a fuse of distrust among them. No one trusted the other, and everyone was on guard, afraid of what ploy the others might use while climbing...
More importantly, under the supervision of Becca Reyes, the distance between the two ropes did not exceed one meter. If they wanted, they could easily attack each other.
"Damn, Agnes is really cruel," Becca commented.
Upon reaching the tree where ropes were tied, Becca noticed the rope tied by Clara, under Agnes’s subsequent actions, was not only loosely tied but even half cut. Such damaged rope would never be used on the training ground because it might lead to accidental death during climbing.
Agnes must have known this. She did so even at the risk of losing her friends, all for the simple, almost laughable reason that she "didn’t want to stay".
A tinge of surprise crossed Becca Reyes’s face. She really couldn’t understand Agnes’s actions. She frowned contemplatively, then sighed and stooped down to secure Clara’s still-swinging rope.
Flossie, who had noticed the condition of the rope, paused for a moment and then very seriously told Becca, who was still squatting and tying the rope, "Make sure to get her to pay for it later."
The nonsensical comment left Becca surprised. She had just tied half of the knot when Flossie’s unexpected statement startled her into nearly dropping the rope. It took her a while to notice Flossie’s serious expression and register what she meant.
"Ah." Becca nodded, twitching at the corner of her mouth, and continued tying the rope.
Flossie got these ropes when she ventured to the outer markets to gather supplies. She bought not only ropes but a lot of other little things, all stored at this small mountain. During their occasional breaks, the two of them would come here to train alone.
They have done activities like climbing up and down the rocks, initiating physical confrontations midway, like Clara and Agnes, many times. Several precarious instances almost resulted in them falling off, but even though the mountain slopes here are steep, there are no sharp rocks and the ground is relatively soft. Resilient plants growing around provide an easy grip. So while this game is thrilling to an extent, as long as they flex their hands and maneuver skillfully, they definitely wouldn’t lose their lives.
She doesn’t know about Flossie’s mindset, but Becca thought she wasn’t as ruthless as Agnes. If there was any real threat to life, she wouldn’t let Clara and Agnes engage in such antics.
However, about making them pay money...
So stingy! Really damned stingy!
"You brought this knife today, didn’t you?"
After tying the rope, Becca stood up and pulled the dagger stuck in the tree trunk. She held it in her hand, playing with it for a while, then turned to Flossie and raised her eyebrows, "Isn’t this knife new?" she asked curiously.
The military knives in the Forces were chrome-plated and black colored to prevent reflection and exposure at night. Unlike those fancy knives you see being sold, they’re not pretty, but they don’t stand out brightly in the dark, functioning like a beacon alerting enemies to one’s presence.
