"BEEP —— BEEP —— BEEP ——"
As the third minute arrived, Austin Shepherd blew the whistle once again.
Upon hearing this, the new recruits, who had just been informed of their grouping and were looking for their team members, rushed over like a flood. Within a span of only about ten seconds, they had formed up neatly in front of Austin Shepherd and Nathan Foster.
He cleared his throat and stood up straight, raising his voice to ask, "Does everyone know who their team member is?"
Another unified response.
"Let’s go over the rules," nodding, Austin Shepherd stood with his hands behind him. "In the following month, your groups will act collectively and inseparably, with a detailed record of all your performances. However..."
His voice trailed off a bit, and then Austin Shepherd’s voice picked up again, "We will be looking at the average score of your group. In other words, if one person in a group lags behind, no matter how outstanding the other person is, they have no chance of staying!"
The words sunk in, and everyone’s faces hardened, ready to object, but Nathan Foster stepped forward and silenced them all with a stern look.
Dead silence.
The atmosphere is tense.
Nobody wants to be the one holding their group back, and of course, nobody wants to be held back either.
But they don’t dare to resist. During their time as new recruits they might have questioned or opposed, but during these two months of training, they have increasingly realized the rules of the Forces.
More importantly, the grouping by Austin Shepherd was rather fair. There was not much difference in strength between teams, which was acceptable to them.
"Alright, everyone, work hard."
In the end, Austin Shepherd concluded.
Stepping back, out came Nathan Foster, who shouted, "Attention, at ease, right turn, five kilometers cross-country!"
The crisp sound of footsteps started to echo.
In the silent Base under the ink-colored night sky, orderly footsteps sound, traveling far into the vast horizon.
Upon finishing the five kilometers, the 300 or so people retreated and promptly fell asleep, exhausted.
However, before they had a chance to rest very long, the wake-up whistle sounded on cue.
Five-thirty.
In a hurried frenzy, everyone began anew day of training.
Along with morning exercise, the schedule included two five-kilometer runs, five 100-meter sprints, and a five-kilometer swim in full gear.
Many complained but none backed down.
Austin Shepherd had said, "In this month we will not teach you anything, what you need to do is push your physical ability to the limit. Your physical stamina will determine whether you stay."
Only push physical ability.
Other than improving their physique, there was no shortcut.
Breakfast time, in the cafeteria.
A group of damp people brought a wave of humidity into the kitchen as they entered, but the cooks, who were busy preparing meals, had already become accustomed to it.
Dragging their exhausted bodies to get breakfast, Becca Reyes and Flossie Wright were standing in line at the back. As they got to where the eggs were, they saw the last egg being taken by the person in front of them.
In an instant, they were met with the sight of an empty basin.
Becca Reyes sighed in disappointment, feeling somewhat desolate.
A soft voice floated over, and an egg dropped into her plate.
Becca Reyes quickly looked up.
However, all she saw was the retreating back of Calvin Ramos.
