"How about it, the reunion is starting soon, do you want to join us?"
Kate Rivera’s voice is tender and pleasant, as if it holds the softness of spring, slowly touching the heartstrings. It is so pleasant to the ear.
After being continuously put down, her persistence is quite obvious and surely holds some deeper implications.
Bits and pieces of disjointed memories float around Flossie Wright’s mind. Her lips curl into a carefree smile as her languid gaze lands on the gentle Ms. Kate Rivera. The sincerity and fervor in Kate’s eyes when she looks at Flossie resemble those of long-lost friends. Yet, Flossie sits with impeccable propriety, showing no intention of closing the distance. No matter how tender or gentle Kate’s smile is, it can’t mask the underlying currents in her eyes.
Speaking of Kate, she does come from a wealthy family, barely considered to be part of high society. Flossie has a good guess about the motivation behind this sudden act of enthusiasm from someone she doesn’t usually associate with: she’s here to make a spectacle out of Flossie.
After all, walls have ears. The news about Rowdy Brightwill calling off the wedding last night must have caused quite a stir by now.
"Can’t you see I’m busy?"
Flossie Wright raises an eyebrow, while her smile might seem genuine, her eyes are subtly cold as if signaling Kate to back off.
After being rejected three times in a row, even the patient Kate is getting frustrated. She suppresses the light in her eyes as her tone retains its courtesy and gentleness, "What kind of appointment do you have? If they’re your friends, just invite them too. This is our first reunion since graduation. It would look bad if you didn’t attend, don’t you think?"
Her words seem like an invitation, but they are actually a trap for Flossie.
If Flossie agrees to go, fine. But if she refuses, it’ll be like she’s snubbing all her classmates. If Kate then "evaluates" Flossie at the reunion, Flossie’s reputation may never recover.
Ordinarily, Flossie wouldn’t care since she isn’t really invested in these relationships and has no intention of making friends at places like this. But she has been longing for some metropolitan excitement for a while now and can’t simply ignore the trouble that’s come her way.
At least she should show some face, right?
"That seems fair." Flossie nods as if considering, then casually asks, "Where is it?"
Getting Flossie’s consent, Kate Rivera’s smile softens, "Dinboo."
Typical class reunions involve both dining and karaoke, and their reunion will be no different.
Dinboo, located on this street, is a fairly renowned restaurant in the city. It boasts an ancient-styled edifice and lavish decor that tally with the luxurious atmosphere. Naturally, only those who spend money like it’s nothing have access to this place. Here, the money you spend represents your social rank; there are always those who spend recklessly for the sake of keeping up appearances.
Flossie’s university experience was fueled by money, and her classmates all came from influential families, many of them ostentatious. She wouldn’t be surprised to see any of them at such a place.
Kate Rivera knows about Flossie Wright’s family background and she’s aware that Flossie has frequent access to luxurious places like this. Throughout it all, there was no hint of boasting in Kate’s demeanor. Her ladylike smile stayed intact as she occasionally reminisced about the past with Flossie, but mostly she inquired about Flossie’s recent situation. For instance, her life in the Forces, why she suddenly came back, and even Rowdy Brightwill’s issue. It seems she’s keen on digging up as many details as she can.
