Like Flossie Wright, they ate steamed buns and dumplings while reading their books.
Ten minutes later, Flossie Wright turned off the lights to sleep, but Jessie Grain didn’t get back to bed to rest until half past two.
The exhausted girls had slept for only about three hours when the wake-up call sounded.
Instructor Franklin Cody’s training was extremely tight, and the original fifteen minutes for meals had been cut down to eight, as if he were determined to drain their strength at every moment.
If it were not for their strong willpower, the three of them would probably not have lasted even a single day.
In the following ten or so days, almost all they could think about was dictated by training, eating, and sleeping.
And for Nancy Phillips and Jessie Grain, who needed to revise their studies in addition, it was nearly maddening.
July 11th, 12 p.m.
For the first time, Instructor Cody released them to the cafeteria for lunch right on the dot.
Flossie Wright, who had already colluded with the cooking class, saw the plates of food ready for them as soon as she entered.
This was considered a timesaver for them.
Just as Flossie Wright and Jessie Grain were about to get their food, they heard Nancy Phillips’s slightly surprised voice nearby.
Both turned their heads to look.
"Over there," Nancy Phillips pointed in a direction, her eyebrows twitching slightly, "the Captain is back!"
Startled, both exchanged glances and followed her gesture.
They saw Ella Pemberton’s figure.
She seemed in good spirits, currently seated next to a dining table with a lunch set in front of her that she hadn’t started eating yet.
And, Instructor Cody was standing across the table, his face as stern as ever.
The two of them, uh, seemed to be conversing happily.
"Should we go over?"
Suddenly, Jessie Grain raised an eyebrow, glancing at the two.
Nancy Phillips, holding her tray, paused before looking back at her and calmly said, "I’m not looking to die."
"Me neither."
Flossie Wright shrugged, chiming in with her.
She was certain that if they approached them, Instructor Cody would be even crueler during the afternoon training.
This Instructor—
could do anything.
Moreover, just because Ella Pemberton was back didn’t mean she would be training them afterward.
Jessie Grain looked surprised for a moment, once again sizing up both Instructor Cody and Ella Pemberton from head to toe, then with a sense of resignation spread her hands and said, "Let’s go."
So, the three girls headed in the opposite direction from Pemberton and Cody.
Seizing the moment, as soon as they sat down, they wolfed down their food.
As Ella Pemberton snapped her chopsticks apart, she listened to Instructor Cody solemnly discussing the training plans and results, as well as the general state of those three girls, a gentle curve lifting the corners of her lips.
"No one’s grumbling?" After listening for a few minutes, Pemberton tilted her head and asked with a light smile.
After pondering for a moment, Instructor Cody pursed his lips and decisively said, "No."
Pemberton couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Even if there had been complaints, they wouldn’t have let Instructor Cody hear them, so his certainty amused Pemberton.
She had seen the revised training plan that Cody had put together, and compared to her original training, it could be described in two words: "utterly cruel."
It hardly left any time for rest.
During her time at home recuperating, what Ella Pemberton worried about most was the training that Flossie and the others were still undergoing. She often pulled strings to check in on them, and having contacted Rowdy Brightwill in recent days, he’d been quite embellishing in his descriptions of Instructor Cody’s "atrocities" in training.
