Rowdy Brightwill simply put his hands in his pockets, took a step forward with his right foot, and stood in a relaxed posture watching him.
He was waiting for his response.
The two faced each other without yielding, the air thickening with the scent of gunpowder.
Jessie Grain and Nancy Phillips were chatting, and Flossie Wright was beside them, peeling an apple. It was a scene of peace and harmony until the tense atmosphere between the others drew their attention.
Flossie glanced up slightly as she peeled the apple, and the continuous strip of apple skin she was peeling suddenly broke off at the last bit, falling onto her thigh.
Flossie picked it up and threw it into the trash can.
At the window, the two standing there seemed not to notice their attention, each one immovably watching the other.
Knock, knock, knock.
Just then, a knock on the door sounded.

Without waiting for a response from inside, the person outside pushed open the slightly ajar door and came straight in.
"Everyone’s here."
Ella Pemberton walked in, and her expression was one of surprise as she saw everyone inside.
Jessie Grain and Nancy Phillips called out to her, one after the other.
With their attention diverted, Rowdy Brightwill looked at her and called out with a smile, "Sis Ella."
"You rascal, not training?"
Ella Pemberton looked at him with a smile on her lips and a questioning gaze but guessed most of the story.
"I took leave specially to come and see the injured," Rowdy Brightwill said with a smile.
"That’s good."
Knowing that he and Nancy Phillips got along well, Ella Pemberton nodded and didn’t inquire further.
Her arrival was well-timed, breaking up the standoff between Rowdy Brightwill and Franklin Cody.
After greeting them, Ella Pemberton took out the porridge she had specially made from home and had Jessie Grain feed it to Nancy Phillips.
As for Flossie, she already finished peeling the apple and quickly cored it and cut it into pieces, placing them all on a plate.
Rowdy Brightwill sat down next to her to start eating.
Bored, Flossie took another pear to peel.
"Hey, I want the whole one."
Seeing her peeling, Rowdy Brightwill immediately raised an eyebrow and claimed the whole pear in advance.
"Peel it yourself."
Flossie glanced sideways at him, returned her gaze, and spoke indifferently.
"You peel it better," Rowdy Brightwill immediately flattered.
The corner of Flossie’s mouth twitched slightly.
Knowing eating a pear had certain taboos, as sharing a pear can mean separation, she understood why Rowdy Brightwill insisted on having the whole pear and didn’t quibble with him.
After peeling the pear, she tossed the whole thing to him.
Catching the pear with his hand, Rowdy Brightwill’s eyebrows lifted, and he ate with a grin on his face.
However, while he was eating here, Franklin Cody called out to Ella Pemberton, and quickly, the two of them walked out of the ward.
The two arrived in the corridor.
"What’s the matter?"
Stopping at the corner, Ella Pemberton looked at Franklin Cody and asked him directly.
If it wasn’t for something, Franklin Cody wouldn’t have purposely called her out. Judging by his face, the matter seemed significant.
He composed himself, looked down at Ella Pemberton for a moment, and then said, "I can’t continue as an Instructor."
"Why?" Ella Pemberton was slightly surprised as she pressed, "Is there a reason?"
If her guess was correct, Franklin Cody had said "can’t," not "don’t want to."
Naturally, his discontinuation as an Instructor wasn’t his own choice; there must be other compelling reasons.
"It’s my personal reasons." Franklin Cody looked serious, and when facing Ella Pemberton, he indeed seemed apologetic.
