The female soldier who had just been humiliated by him had such formidable shooting skills, which is rather embarrassing, all things considered.
However, before he could speak, Rowdy Brightwill’s voice rang out, intense with sternness and forewarning. "Janice Wood, didn’t your squad leader teach you not to put comrades at gunpoint?"
Janice Wood’s expression froze slightly, a shade of guilt flashing across her face.
Indeed, the act of directly pointing a firearm at comrades was undoubtedly a breach of military discipline.
"No big deal," Winsley Scott quickly jumped in, playing peacemaker despite being the victim, he said to Rowdy Brightwill, "it was only a joke. Let’s not take it seriously."
Though he was speaking to Rowdy Brightwill, his gaze was fixed on Janice. He looked jovially round-headed, which made him seem rather foolish.
Rowdy Brightwill’s gaze swept over him unusually suspicious, yet he seemed quite baffled by Winsley’s foolishness. Despite that, he didn’t investigate the matter further.
Forget it, he thought. He was no longer an instructor for the new recruits. Some things were sometimes best left unseen.
It was fortunate that Drake Easton, the stickler for rules, wasn’t present, or else he would have severely reprimanded Janice Wood and Flossie Wright regardless of Winsley’s intervention.
Janice showed her gratitude with a smile at Winsley, surprised that he remained so magnanimous despite her harsh actions towards him. She couldn’t help but feel guilty.
Flossie, who had seen everything, continued eating her roasted fish and rabbit as if nothing happened.
That evening, due to the end of the military drill, Winsley Scott and Rowdy Brightwill were supposed to meet with the main Forces, but for some strange reason, Winsley, seeing Janice setting up the tent for the night, enthusiastically dragged Rowdy Brightwill over to help. The act left Rowdy Brightwill’s face dark, but he eventually helped set up Flossie’s tent, too.
Willie Ash and the Sniper stayed back, competitively testing their shooting skills by aiming at several leftover fish bones hanging from trees. Whoever hit the most in the same time frame was deemed the winner. Their extraordinary shooting skills left Janice utterly astonished.
Thus, only Flossie and Glenn Hutchinson remained by the fire.
"You seem unbothered by our stalemate?"
As she added wood to the fire, Flossie turned her head toward Glenn and raised an eyebrow, her eyes hinting at a glint of interest.
From the start, Flossie found it strange. Glenn should have anticipated that she and Janice were the ones who neutralized the ’captives,’ but he didn’t utter a word about it, unlike Rowdy Brightwill who questioned them. His carefree demeanor indicated that he was not bothered by it.
Glenn glanced at her, his face illuminated by the flickering firelight. A hint of amusement seemed to cross his features.
"Isn’t it fine like this?" he retorted.
Eh... Flossie was momentarily taken aback, becoming somewhat embarrassed once she understood his meaning.
Most likely, Glenn had no intention of winning the Marine Corps. He can be domineering on their territory but cannot ignore giving them some respect. Hence, he could annihilate all the Marine Corps on land but needed to appear as the weak side at sea. This bargaining strategy would allow both sides to take advantage of each other’s strengths, fostering an amicable collaboration.
Otherwise, overtly embarrassing the Marine Corps by winning on both land and sea would be akin to making an enemy out of them.
Having realized the truth, Flossie chucked wood into the fire. The shadows hid her brows as they slightly knitted. It turned out that she not only worked hard for nothing that night, but also unwittingly became Glenn’s pawn.
