Since Neal Thompson was bent on finding fault, she didn’t need any reason to punish them. In her mouth, she could turn black into white.
Being the newcomers in the Forces, the two of them couldn’t possibly go against the orders of their superior officer, or they would face hardship.
Fortunately, Neal didn’t pursue Becca Reyes’ unrefined voice, she shot them a hateful glance and then hastily went to the kitchen to wash her face.
"Well, sorry about that."
As Neal’s figure disappeared through the back door, although Becca was gritting her teeth in anger, she still apologized awkwardly to Flossie Wright.
She was not accustomed to owing others, but this time, without question, she had indeed involved innocent Flossie.
"It’s okay."
Flossie Wright answered indifferently, appearing much calmer than her, and didn’t take this incident seriously.
Based on Yvonne Watson’s advice in the morning, Neal would inevitably come after her sooner or later. Cleaning was not enough to cross Flossie Wright’s line, let alone improving the mood of the hormonally imbalanced sous officer. It was indeed a good deed.
Though Flossie Wright had made it clear she bore no resentment, Becca still couldn’t let it go, and spent the afternoon cleaning tables, washing dishes, and scrubbing, even the corners and crevices of the kitchen were not spared. It shocked all the male cooks watching, their masculinity provoked, they began to help, performing a thorough cleaning of the kitchen and dining hall with the fastest speed for the two of them.
Neal Thompson, who saw all of this, was almost furious enough to burst a lung, but since the male cooks were not under her authority, she could not stop them, and could only curse the cunning Becca and Flossie in her heart. Her face was bad all afternoon.
Originally, Neal wanted to find fault during the sanitation inspection, otherwise, she could not swallow her anger. Unexpectedly, during her inspection, the Squadron leader, Glenn, was with her the entire time, clearly warning her not to overdo it. In the end, she had to swallow her anger and could only stand in the drill ground watching Flossie Wright run laps.
"I’ll accompany you." Halfway through Flossie’s lap, Becca ran up to Flossie with a heavy expression, seemingly worried about Flossie.
When they were in the rookie squad, Flossie’s physical strength was laughable. A five-kilometer morning run was enough to leave her half-dead. The running track here was a thousand meters, ten laps were ten kilometers, and she didn’t know if Flossie could persist to the end.
Flossie turned her head to glance at her, but didn’t speak to maintain her breathing rhythm.
It was now winter and the temperature was just right near dusk. The slightly cool breeze was immensely comfort.
Neal watched them from under the shade of the trees. She assumed that their stamina would not be sturdy, just like the fragile Yvonne Watson. But surprisingly, she watched Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes complete seven laps without changing their pace. She had thought she could discipline Flossie here, but she ended up being disappointed.
Gulping for breath after finishing the last lap, Becca Reyes, who was leaning on her knees, suddenly smiled at Flossie Wright. Her curved brows and approving gaze were undoubtedly genuine compliments for Flossie Wright.
"Same to you." Wiping the sweat off her forehead, Flossie Wright looked at the setting sun and after pausing, she said, "Time to cook."
"Damn," Becca cursed. As she massaged her knees, her gaze swept over the surroundings, " No wonder the Night Hag left before we finished running."
They’d been working since lunch without rest. After running ten laps, they had to rush into the kitchen to work without catching their breath. Becca truly felt that even working in the kitchen involved physical labor not smaller than that in the rookie regiment.
Of course, compared to those who were...
Becca abruptly stood up, following Flossie’s gaze.
There was the setting sun about to dip below the horizon, and the training ground of the Base. There were people sweating and striving, others suffering but not saying a word of quitting.
But all of this had nothing to do with them.
They worked in Logistics, they could only watch those who do the hard work.
For some reason, the feeling of discontent in Becca’s heart was intensified.
She didn’t want to lose, so, she would keep going.
That night, neither of them gave Neal Thompson any opportunity to find fault. Yvonne Watson, being a fence-sitter, began to please Neal as soon as she came back, ignoring Flossie whom she was trying to win over initially.
Becca was astounded by this move, but seeing Flossie not taking it to heart, she somehow felt more balanced.
The next day, at three o’clock in the early morning.
It was the most tranquil moment of the night, when everyone was deep in sleep. The darkness and silence enveloped the Base, even the sounds of insects and birds were absent, with only the faint snores coming from the dormitories.
In the Office, Glenn Hutchinson, who had just finished his report, saw shadows moving outside the window. The sound of footsteps in the night were particularly clear.
Nighttime extra training was a common occurrence in the Forces, and Glenn wasn’t surprised at all. However, the passing figure that came into his sight looked familiar.
He moved to the window where he saw two figures running on the drill ground and his gaze fell upon one figure. The dim light from the road fell on her, casting a faint halo. Her petite and delicate face flashed by under the light, but for Glenn Hutchinson, it was startlingly clear.

After watching for a while, when they finished their lap, a smile flickered across Glenn Hutchinson’s eyes, and he went straight outside.
