For those soldiers who felt that the people they were protecting didn’t truly appreciate them— expecting them to sacrifice their lives without batting an eye, treating their sacrifices with indifference— disappointment and even despair would naturally take root. Some became resentful and began to question, while others would choose to push forward. Some, upon feeling utterly hopeless, would choose to leave.
In the grand scheme of things, there is no right or wrong in this situation.
They happened to have encountered such people, but it’s unfair to lump everyone together. There were still many in this country who were rallying behind and passionately thanking them.
One could put the blame on no single person as to how things have developed to this extent.
Even though Flossie was part of it, perhaps, having experienced too many such situations, or perhaps because she has lost much of her feelings, she did not have too many thoughts about it, nor made any judgments.
When all was said and done, she had done everything she could.
By the time it was nearing dusk, the daylong rain had finally ceased.
It wasn’t yet dinnertime at the base when Captain Lin called Flossie into the kitchen.

The cooking class had pretty much finished preparing the meal. The kitchen was occupied only by Captain Lin and two cooks, each busy with their own tasks. However, the packed food on the empty table immediately caught Flossie’s attention.
"Captain Hutchinson is at the training ground."
As he spoke, Captain Lin kept his head down, engrossed in his work. He spoke directly to Flossie, without even raising his head, unafraid that she wouldn’t understand his implications.
The packed food, Captain Hutchinson.
What they wanted Flossie to do couldn’t have been more clear.
As for these minor tasks, Flossie seldom refused. This time was no exception. Recalling her unpleasant encounters with Glenn, Flossie frowned. However, as usual, she picked up the food and left the kitchen.
The entire team had the day off today, leaving only Glenn’s team still training. The team had dwindled from over twenty people to about ten. As a result, their presence on the base was greatly reduced. They come and go like ghosts, appearing and disappearing so suddenly that no one knew where they came from or when they would vanish again.
When she arrived at the training ground, the dozen-odd people were still training. However, their training looked quite laid-back, with everyone freely choosing their own exercises. These exercises were usually restricted due to limitations, but they seemed more than enough for this small group.
After scanning the scene, Flossie still couldn’t find Glenn.
"Hey, are you looking for the Captain?"
Suddenly, Willie Ash, who had just come down from the parallel bars, waved at Flossie, drawing her attention.
Having previously looked for Glenn more than once, Flossie followed Willie’s directions and finally spotted Glenn on a small hill.
When she saw Glenn, he was sitting on the grassy slope, his back turned to her, dressed in his military uniform. In front of him was the vast sea, with the sea breeze blowing straight at him, creating ripples on the surface and rustling the nearby leaves and grass.
The sun, which had been missing all day, finally appeared on the horizon as it began to descend, albeit hidden in the haze, dim and indistinct with all but a hint of genuine sunlight blocked at the skyline.
As usual, Flossie walked over and handed the food in her hand to Glenn. Always sparing with her words, she said just one, which could be easily understood.
