After morning training, the sky began to darken, and by the morning, it was covered with gloomy clouds. Soon after lunch at the Base, a torrential rain began to fall.
Under the watchful eyes of Neal Thompson, Flossie Wright and Becca Reyes collected and washed all the cutlery from the cafeteria, and then cleaned up the cafeteria. However, the rain grew even heavier, with large beads of water falling from the eaves, stirring up endless ripples. As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but an endless curtain of rain, blurring the lines of sight. The mist hung in the air, making everything seem indistinct.
"Hey, want to check it out?" After dealing with everything and seeing Neal Thompson leave with a gloomy expression, Becca Reyes leaned in towards Flossie Wright and said purposefully, "The squad leader is making ginger soup."
Without a doubt, she wanted to see how the recruits would be trained in such weather.
In the recruit company, the instructors would unquestionably give consideration to their safety and suspend the training. However, only the most resilient could survive in such a place, where kindness and weak sentiments were discarded. In other words, they wouldn’t refrain from battle just because the weather was bad. That would obviously be impossible.
So, Becca Reyes was curious.
Curious about how ruthless the instructors could be, and also about how the recruits would evolve from ordinary people into genuine soldiers.
As the saying goes, the well-fed do not understand the hunger of the starving. The recruits may envy her and Flossie’s leisurely life in cooking class, but to someone like Becca Reyes who yearns to be at the front line, she is the starving "starving man".
Looking at the curtain of rain outside, Flossie nodded casually. After all, she had nothing else to do.
The ginger soup Squad Leader Lin made was obviously for the trainees who were still training. After all, training is one thing, but it would be a total loss if they end up exhausting the new recruits. Several male soldiers found out that Flossie and Becca were also going to help and gladly accepted their assistance, even providing them with two umbrellas and some light jobs like carrying bowls and cups along the way.
Because of the weather, the path was difficult to traverse, so they left a little earlier. Unexpectedly, they arrived early, just in time to catch the new recruits during their shooting training.
"Such heavy rain, and they’re still shooting?"
Becca Reyes frowned, her eyes resting on the solemn shooting range. Apart from the recruits currently shooting, the others were standing in perfect formation. The rain was beating down on them, but their bodies, firm like pine trees, didn’t flinch. They were firmly planted as if rooted to the ground.
In the pouring rain, the targets hundreds of meters away were obscured. Even the bullseye was hard to make out. Factoring in the rain and wind speed, the shooting difficulty had exceeded the capabilities of these newly graduated soldiers.
The cook who was setting up a stove under an umbrella glanced at her, chuckling as he retorted, "So we wouldn’t go to war when it rains? Would the enemy not shoot at you because it’s raining?"
Becca Reyes was taken aback and speechless.
Living in peace, she had never thought about what real battlefields would be like.
"Bang bang bang—"
Continuous gunshots echoed from the shooting range, piercing through the wind and rain. Flossie watched those alert recruits diligently shooting, and soon, her gaze fell on one of them, a female soldier—Janice Wood.
From her angle, Flossie could only see Janice’s pale face, rain and sweat streaking down her cheeks. Yet her eyes were determined and calm, her hand on the rifle unflinching, each shot hitting the target without fail.
